However, most of the shops and restaurants will accept American dollars, and if you're in a tourist area, such as Puerto Plata or Punta Cana, English, and other languages will be spoken.

Choosing a wedding destination can be quite an exercise, as the location sets the tone for the entire occasion. There is a wide range of places out there, so you must weigh them carefully when choosing your wedding venue. 1. Know your budget. This is the first step you need to take when shortlisting a location, so you know eforehand whether it will fit in your pocket or not. 2. Have an estimate number of guests. The cost of wedding venues and accommodation can vary greatly with the number of expected guests. 3. Agree on a destination you both enjoy or have always wanted to visit. 4. Find out if there will be any big event on the same date/s as yours at those potential locations. This is quite important because flight and accommodation prices could go up and get booked up quickly. 5. Decide on the type of wedding location you would like. Many people prefer an outdoor or a garden wedding over indoor weddings. Try not to be in two minds while looking for a wedding location otherwise you will never be able to shortlist any destination convincingly. Talk to you better half and make sure you have a consensus on at least the type of venue. 6. Have in mind that a church or temple ceremony means guests will need to be transported from the hotel to the church, and then from the church to the reception location, so this logistic requires careful planning. 7. Check the weather history to get a sense of the typical weather for the desired locations and wedding date. 8. Plan your wedding decorations. Decide the look, feel, and theme for your wedding, and plan the decorations accordingly. Work with a local florist to select your flowers, including centerpieces. Keep in mind that flowers are more expensive and are in limited availability during the winter. 9. Make sure the wedding location has an easy and accessible way for elderly or disabled guests to get to the ceremony and / or reception site. 10. Bear in mind that sunset ceremonies, while stunning, are often difficult to view and to photograph . You and your better half could be backlit, and the photographs will show all your guests screening their eyes with their programs. 11. Put together a solid plan B in case of bad weather. Which one would you choose? Keep reading to find out more... *HANDFASTING CEREMONY (AKA Tying the knot ceremony) This is an ancient Irish tradition, where your hands and your better-half hands are tied together as a symbol of your union. They say this is where the phrase “tying the knot” comes from. In this ritual, the celebrant will tie your hands with a ribbon/cord or with several ribbons/cords while you are pronouncing your wedding vows, or as she/he says a special poem. You can choose one / several colors depending on what you would like to symbolize with this ceremony: White ribbon/cord: purity Red ribbon/cord: passion Blue ribbon/cord: fidelity Green ribbon/cord: fertility and growth Purple ribbon/cord: spiritual strength Gold ribbon/cord: wisdom Black ribbon/cord: pure love and success Orange ribbon/cord: kindness Gray ribbon/cord: balance Yellow ribbon/cord: harmony Silver ribbon/cord: protection and creativity Brown ribbon/cord: nurturing Personalize it! How? Instead of a cord/ribbon ask your florist to make a garland with flowers that represent what you would like to symbolize with this beautiful ceremony. E.g.: baby’s breath equal to purity of heart, yellow rose equal to friendship, etc. *HOURGLASS SAND CEREMONY This is a variant of the classic sand ceremony, but in this case, instead of a vase, the couple combines the sand in an hourglass. You can use different colored sand that matches your wedding color, or you can just use sand from the beach! With this lovely ceremony you symbolize the start of your lives together, and once sealed, the authentic and meaningful hourglass can be part of the décor of your new home. *LOVE LOCK CEREMONY This romantic ceremony symbolizes the commitment, strength, and constancy of a relationship. The couple will lock together two padlocks while the celebrant describes both the action and what it means in the view of the couple. They then throw the key away, ensuring that their love will be unbreakable. A poem or other reading may also be done while joining of the padlocks. Personalize it! How? Engrave, paint or scratch your names, initials, and/or the date on the locks. *WINE CEREMONY If you want a ritual that symbolizes the blending of two lives, then the wine ceremony is perfect for you! The couple will pour wine from two different bottles into the same glass, and then, they will both drink from this glass. The celebrant or a relative can read a relevant poem or text that describes the meaning of the ritual for the couple. Reading sample: “This ceremony represents your two individual lives, combined like the two wines into one single life. The drinking of the combined wine signifies the commitment you now make to live your lives as one family. May you remember this day of commitment you have sealed with drinking of the new wine joining your lives as one.” Personalize it! How? Change the wine for tequila shots, a delicious mojito or any other easy-to-prepare cocktail! *WINE BOX CEREMONY It is also called “Love letter ceremony”, and it’s perfect for couples who like wine and who love to write. Your future partner in life has major premarital responsibilities, such as child support, alimony, or tax debts. How to go about it? Communication, communication, communication. Start discussing the prenup well in advance of the wedding date. When discussing the terms be open, candid, and direct. Listen to your partner and invite ideas. Make sure to choose a time and a quiet place where both of you are relaxed having this conversation. Make a list of all assets and obligations and, if possible, any future inheritances. Make sure to include any gifts and belongings that each party is bringing into the marriage. Decide who will pay any debt contracted during the marriage. Be aware that the price will depend on the number of assets involved and that the whole process can take from two to three weeks.
